Lenovo removed wrong maps from laptops of Income tax department

Two days after TOI reported about the distorted Indian maps in wallpapers on laptops supplied to the income-tax department, the supplier (Lenovo) has started removing it.  The systems department of the income-tax department has informed its officials about the time and day of the company’s visit. “In some laptops, they have already removed it. In the next few days, the entire exercise should be over,” an income tax official said.

China-headquartered Lenovo had supplied 2,500 laptops to the department in mid-February. In the wallpapers installed in these computers, Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir was shown in Pakistan and Aksai Chin was mentioned as being in China. India has all along maintained that Aksai Chin is a part of Indian territory though China has disputed that and claims it falls in the Chinese province of Xinjiang. Pakistan-Administered Kashmir (PAK), which India refers to as Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (POK), is also a territory claimed by India but controlled by Pakistan.

The primary display is very clear and bright, very good contrast. The secondary display is not as clear as its big brother's but what can you expect? You can fold the small display at about a 45 degree angle so you could get a clear view of the both. This display is very useful when running graphic programs, like Adobe Photoshop. You can move all those annoying toolboxes on the secondary screen to prevent them from constantly getting in the way. It's also good for keeping your chat windows always open while you are running different other applications. The keyboard looks very computer desktop like with full sized keys. Typing is pleasant and smooth, you only have to perform short stokes and there you go. You have the standard speaker control buttons for volume and mute.

As we imagined, a big laptop such as the Lenovo ThinkPad W700ds was sure to have a big Lenovo battery. And we were right. The 9-cell battery of this laptop will only last about 2 hours if unplugged and a bit more that 1 hour for movie playback. It's OK, especially since it was meant to be put on your desk and to stay there, it's not like you were going to carry all that weight around anyway. The battery life will be shortened by 20% if you also use the small display, even if both screens are only at a middle-level in terms of brightness. Should you use both screen and run simple tasks like web surfing and checking your e-mail you will get an average of 1 hour and 45 minutes of battery life. We imagined that a laptop this big with all that hardware inside would cause some serious heat problems but we were wrong. The fan is not as noisy as we expected either and if you use this laptop in a crowded place, you may not even notice any kind of fan noise.

 The reviews for this laptop are positive (except for the ones that complain about the 11 pounds weight and left-handed users that find it hard to manage with the right-positioned digitizer) and we admire Lenovo for adventuring itself and building such a big laptop with two displays and so expensive that it break all barriers. Lenovo responds to laptop reliability study

After a fairly poor showing in a study on laptop reliability, Lenovo is fighting back - disagreeing with the results and questioning the motives of the company behind it.

The study, carried out by SquareTrade, attempted to quantify laptop reliability over a three year period and showed Lenovo's range of business-oriented notebooks pipped to the post by Asus, Apple, Toshiba, Dell, and Sony. However, Lenovo isn't happy with their placing - and is calling shenanigans.

Ray Gorman, executive director of external communications at Lenovo, points out that while the study looked at data from 30,000 laptops from nine manufacturers and across three different categories, in an industry which shipped 142.5 million laptops last year the "total number claimed in this report is not a statistically significant sample for a study where no attempt is made to control key variables affecting repair rates, such as comparable machine types, end users, geography, and applications."

As an example culled from Lenovo's own warranty repair data, Gorman points out that the company would "expect a 10X difference in repair rates between systems bought for [secondary school] students and systems used only in a home office by adults," a distinction which isn't made by SquareTrade's study.

Arguing that SquareTrade "has a vested interested in showing scary failure rates as they have done here [as] they are in the business of selling after sale warranties," Gorman claims that Lenovo's internal data shows that laptop failure rates are "at least two-thirds lower than what is claimed in the Square Trade survey."

For those concerned by the high rate of failure that SquareTrade quoted in their study, Gorman says not to worry: "PC hardware is extremely reliable, and this study is full of holes[, as the] method is flawed, the data is inaccurate, and the conclusion is wrong."
